WELCOME TO THE TAG
(TALENTED AND GIFTED) PROGRAM!

Feather Fountain Pen

The 8th grade Talented and Gifted Program (TAG) evolved from an experimental one half- year, half-day program to a full year half-day program in 1983 with the site at Richard C. Lee High School. As Lee High School evolved into Career High School and the present Hill Regional Career Magnet High School, the 8th grade TAG program has continued to be housed in it. From its very inception, the program was designed to be a transitional TAG program from the middle school to the high school.

PHILOSOPHY AND OBJECTIVES

8th grade TAG's philosophy and objectives are similar to those of Independent Study and Seminar Program, New Haven's program for talented and gifted and potentially talented and gifted high school students. We respond to the expectations of the students adn their parents through a commitment to help our students grow in self awareness and in academic preparation. Our curriculum is geared to help students to:

  • Learn how to pursue a subject on one's own and transfer that knowlege to other areas of study
  • focus interests and goals
  • Extrapolate, synthesize, and interpret critically
  • Learn by understanding that one question leads to othetrs
  • Encourage give and take in group discussions
  • Foster creativity and originality
  • Recognize that failures, frustrations, setbacks, and successes are part of the learning process
  • Develop humility and open- mindedness
  • Develop a sense of responsibility and an ability for self-evaluation

How are students selected?

Students are recommended by their 7th grade TAG teachers to be in the program. Under certain circumstances, special nominations are accepted. Note: The right of any student to participate shall not be impaired because of any race, color, national origin, age or any disability.

When do students attend?

Students attend either the Tuesday Session or the Wednesday Session. These monrining sessions usually last a little under three hours. Students are picked up from their home schools and transported to Hill Regional Career Magnet High School. Transportation back to their home schools is provided as well. Depending on a student's home school lunch schedule, some students may eat their lunch at Career.
